Our History

Club Membership

Luxulyan Short Mat Bowls Club was formed almost 30 years ago by Mrs Vera Matthews and Mr Roy Denslow (Roy is still currently the President of the club). The club plays all year round (except for the Christmas period!) on both Wednesdays (2pm - 4pm and 7pm - 9pm) and Fridays (7pm - 9pm). We play at Luxulyan Village Hall (pictured above), based in the village of Luxulyan, Cornwall. We have several members and provide two teams to play in the Cornwall Short Mat Bowls Association’s Winter League Central Divisions and Summer League West Division. The bowls sessions, whether in competition or practice, always provides a great atmosphere, and a good way for gentle exercise. It’s a fantastic way to meet new people with a cup of tea and friendly chat.

Approximately five years ago, with the help of a grant, we managed to replace our old manual mat holder for a new electric mat holder, making it less strenuous to set up and clear away with every session.

This winter season 2018-19, our own Luxulyan Maroons team (pictured above) won the Central Division One title gaining promotion to the Central Premier Division, and also went on to win the County Division One Champions title, beating three teams from the other respective divisions in Cornwall.

During our history our members have got involved with many events, held our own charity events and this year we are taking the opportunity to assist with our local carnival and offer a fun night to come and try our great sport.

The first three times you come for one of our practices, as a guest these are your taster sessions and therefore are free. You then have to become a member of our club which costs annually £20.50 for a full membership and a child membership (up to and including 15 years of age at registering) is free. The membership runs from 1st May to 30th April. This fee includes your affiliation to the Cornwall Short Mat Bowls Association and allows you to participate in the league as a playing member or reserve to one of our club teams. You will get a club information pack on your first year of membership, with a copy of the club rules and regulations (they are rules that we have to have in place at our club like... no wearing of outdoor shoes on the mats, this may cause damage to the mat, etc...).

A subscription of £2.50 (per adult) and £1.50 (for children) is payable every time you come to participate, whether to practice or play a home match, which covers the clubs running expenses (like hall hire, electric, etc...). For matches you will need uniform, but most of it can be purchased cheaply from local clothes/supermarkets stores, and our members can offer advice on where to get any other equipment. You don't need to have this straight away, as well as bowls. We have spare bowls at the club to get you started.
